With the 2004 Law on Religion, persecution and harassment by the authorities have decreased. One can even hear positive statements about Christian communities on the radio and the authorities allow a certain number of Bibles to be printed. The number of Christians has increased greatly in recent years. Within the minority Hmong tribe alone, there are now hundreds of thousands.

However, local Vietnamese authorities continue to exert pressure - especially on minorities. Although freedom of religion is enshrined in the constitution, the communist government attempts to keep religious life under control with a system of compulsory registration. Christians often face arbitrary action by the authorities.
